Upgrading XP Home Ed. to XP Pro

Help! I've just learned that I ordered 4 Dell PC's with XP Home Edition and
need to upgrade to XP Pro. Dell's cost is high but my most concern is, is
this considered an upgrade? If so, what do I purchase other than the full
version of XP Pro? or is there an upgrade from home to pro XP edition
somewhere? I have had many options given but no one has answered my purchase
questions. What version do I buy?

The standard XP Pro Upgrade retail kit will upgrade Home to Pro. However,
Dell may not support the warranty for the 4 PCs, since they were originally
delivered with Home. Some OEM companies only honour the warranty if the PC
is using the version of XP that was delivered with the PC.

XP Pro Upgrade Version, or XP Pro OEM.

More than likely the OEM version is cheaper, but you'll will have to
start from scratch, and do a clean install.

XP Pro Upgrade will likely be a little more eXPensive, but then you can
do an upgrade install.

Yes you can upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro.
You will only need to purchase the Upgrade version.

Dell only charges approximately $63 for an upgrade to Windows XP
Professional at the time of order. Now you'll have to spend $199 for
each "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional.

Is it too late to change your order with Dell?

Yes, you can upgrade XP Home to Professional. There is no special
upgrade version just for this, but the regular XP Professional
Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't say so on the box).



If they haven't shipped the computers yet, instead of upgrading,
you may be able to change your order. Why not call them and ask?



But are you sure you need to do this? Are you aware that XP Home
and Professional are identical except that Professional includes
a few features (mostly related to security and networking)
missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never use
these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

You are likely right, but not necessarily. I know more than one
home with four computers--one for each of the parents, the others
for each of the two kids.

Heck, I'm in a home environment, with *no* kids at home, and
there are three computers here.

Same here: two laptops and a desktop all networked, but all running Pro!
