Upgrading Windows 2000

I am currently trying to upgrade a Windows 2000 pro system to windows xp. I
don't get very far when the system appears to be freezing. It says
"initializing configuration..." in the bottom left hand side of the
computer. I've been waiting for 25 minutes so far without any changes.
There are no lights flashing on the computer so I'm guessing that the
computer is frozen. Is this normal behaviour for an upgrade? I have
several important things to take care of today and I really do not want to
have to install all of the software that is currently on the computer if I
have to format. Should be expecting to wait this long for an upgrade?

25 minutes without changes seems exsessive. I have a PC that I was running
Windows XP SP1 on, when I tried to install SP2 it did about the same thing
yours is doing. I let it run overnight, no change. For some reason that PC
does not like SP2.

If your problem is similar, I'd try upgrading with an SP1 disk instead.
