upgrading from Windows 2000

I appologize for posting in multiple groups I just wasn't sure which one to
post in.

I am currently trying to upgrade a Windows 2000 pro system to windows xp. I
don't get very far when the system appears to be freezing. It says
"initializing configuration..." in the bottom left hand side of the
computer. I've been waiting for 25 minutes so far without any changes.
There are no lights flashing on the computer so I'm guessing that the
computer is frozen. Is this normal behaviour for an upgrade? I have
several important things to take care of today and I really do not want to
have to install all of the software that is currently on the computer if I
have to format. Should I be expecting to wait this long for an upgrade?

Should run a compatibility check on the Windows 2000 computer
and also clean up any hard drive file problems by defragging it
and running chkdsk. Make applicable backups for any valuable data,
information, picture, etc. files.

But if in a hurry, then it would be better to wait. And doing a
clean installation could also be the final option if all else
fails.

Please do not send the same message separately to more than one newsgroup
(called multiposting). Doing so just fragments the thread, so someone who
answers in one newsgroup doesn't get to see answers from others in another
newsgroup. And for those who read all the newsgroups the message is
multiposted to, they see the message multiple times instead of once (they
would see it only once if you correctly crossposted instead).

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please do so
by crossposting (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Please see "What is the accepted way to share a message across multiple
newsgroups?" at http://smjg.port5.com/faqs/usenet/xpost.html

Are you trying to upgrade to XP Professional or XP Home? I don't know that
this is your problem, but you can only upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP
Professional, not XP Home.
