Upgrading PC hardware

Guest

I currently have a P4 1.8 ghz cpu on an ASUS motherboard using 1 GB of
PC133mhz SDRAM. I built this computer myself. I installed WinXP on a 80 gig
HD (and updated to SP2). My question is: Is it possible to replace the
motherboard, cpu, and ram in my computer (while still utulizing all my other
hardware, video card, harddrive, cdrw and cd drive, etc.) and maintain the
current WinXP install?
I purchased a new Asus motherboard, a new 3.0 Ghz P4 w/HT, and 512 MB of
PC3200 DDR ram.
Will XP consider this a new PC and require a new install? Will my keycode
work with this new equipment?

Thanks in advance for your time and information.

Is your version of XP OEM or retail? Has it been over 120 days since the
last install on this machine?

Alias,
Thanks for responding so quickly.
My version of Windows XP Home is retail. And it has been over 120 days since
I installed XP in my computer.

Thanks agian,

Then you won't have any problem changing anything and you will be able to
activate online with no problems. It will be just like it was the first time
you installed it.

Alias,
Just so I'm clear on this, I'm ok to just change the motherboard, cpu, ram,
plug in all other existing hardware as on existing pc, then boot up via the
harddrive and XP will prompt to activate.

Or should I change all the hardware as listed above, change BIOS to boot via
CD-ROM with the XP Home CD in CD drive, then have XP activate via CD setup
program?

Reading the response from Carey Frisch in combo with your response has me
just a bit confused on the sequence of events.

Your help is greatly appreciated!
I thank you immensly for such quick responses!

If you change motherboard you should do a Repair reinstall to ensure the
system is matched correctly to the hardware. Set the BIOS to boot CD
before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take
'Repair' at this stage), then after the license agreement take 'Repair
Installation'. This will retain your existing software installations
and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again, especially
Service packs; I would have the SP 2 CD to hand ready to run as first
thing.

It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net , so as to be protected against things like the BLAST
worm.

You will probably find you have made so many changes that you need to
activate again by phoning in, with the system only booting Safe Mode
until you have done so

Always back up essential data before doing any major system operation
like this, if you are still in a position to do so
