Upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro Error

I just bought a HP Pavilion a1350y desktop with XP Home. I have XP Pro
and am trying to upgrade it, but towards the end of setup. I get the
blue screen that indicates "Setup cannot set the required Windows XP
configuration Information". The MS Support site indicates a hardware
or BIOS problem. But the compatibility tests indicate everything is ok
and the desktop has all the original hardware and has been approved by
microsoft. Also there is no updated BIOS according the the HP website.
The install also fails booting right off of the disk installing new
(not upgrade). MS is sending me a new XP Pro disk, but I'm not sure
that's it. The bigger pain is once it failed, the system is hosed and
I need to do a complete recovery to reinstall XP Home to use the
computer at all. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You perform an upgrade while you are
at your XP Home desktop. This is the
correct procedure:

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive.

Nope didn't work. Same problem and I needed to do a complete restore.
Any other ideas?
