upgrading from Windows ME to XP Pro using retail upgrade CD

P

Paco

I am considering upgrading from Windows ME to XP Pro but
would like to do a clean install...backup my data, format
the hard drive, and install XP Pro. I understand that a
clean install is the easiest installation option and will
help assure that my computer operates efficiently in the
future. (I've run the Upgrade Advisor so I'm aware of a
few incompatible programs, etc.).

I have my original Windows ME CD ROM that came with my
Dell system.

Does the retail upgrade version of XP Pro require the
Windows ME be actually installed on the hard drive or can
I insert the Windows ME CD ROM at the appropriate time
when the setup program searches for a prior version of
Windows?

Any help on this question would be appreciated.

Generally you can perform a Clean Installation with an Upgrade CD.
You will need to insert the qualifying media in the computer for a few
minutes when requested.
I think your Dell CD will work but I am not sure.
Many Restore CDs from other computer makers will not work but Dell and
Gateway have been somewhat of an exception.

If it is an image CD it will not work, but if it is a Windows CD with
the cab files it usually works.

If it is an image CD, you would need to install ME and then upgrade.

the cd will do.
when you have probs, contact MS helpdesk and ask them what to do.
Normally they give quit good info and help.
when they can't help you, ask a friend's old OS-cd...;-)
Ans as you mentioned yourself , don't do an upgrade-installation,
