Repair XP Pro retail version

A few notes.
1. Problems too many to list. I'll try this before reformating computer. It
worked on my old Win98se before I reformatted and upgraded to XP Pro. This is
a home made computer, legal XP PRO SP2 retail version, stand alone, no
network.

2. I'm going to do a repair of my XP Pro SP2 Retail version. In reading the
warning #1 in link -
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RI, I do not have the
" To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R" option
but only "Upgrade -recomended" window when I choose install from my disk in
my CDROM menu. Is the upgrade the same as repair?

3. I have read other Microsoft KB's and maybe I'm just not reading it right,
but they seem to contradict some things in the above link.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q312369. Do I follow
the Microsoft site instructions or michael stevens site info?

4. Slip streaming is mentioned for SP2 above. However, a note in
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en
says -"DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A
smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update."

Can someone clear these items up?
Thanks

Did you boot from the winxp cd?
Slipstreaming; you need the full download, not the winupdate download, in
order to created a slipstreamed installation cd

MS Kb article;
NOTE: The information in this article applies only to computers with
*Windows XP preinstalled* by a computer manufacturer.

You're not reading all the information contained in Michael's instructions.
Step 1 in the procedure tells you to boot from the XP installation CD.
You're trying to start the repair while Windows is running. The better
approach is to configure your computer to boot from the CD.

Here's another article on repair installations that you may find helpful.

Once again, you're missing a point made in the article. Under the Symptoms
heading is the following information.

NOTE: The information in this article applies only to computers with Windows
XP preinstalled by a computer manufacturer.

You've stated that this is a home made computer running a retail version of
XP Pro. Sounds like that article doesn't apply to you.

If you need to slipstream a service pack into your installation media, you
can safely ignore that warning. Here are a couple of articles you may find
helpful that outline how to use a program called AutoStreamer to create a
new installation CD.

Can someone clear these items up?
Thanks

Good luck

Thank you Nepatsfan, for your link,

It was just what I was looking for. Concise and to the point. That's all I
wanted. Many thanks to others also.
I do see now I was in error for not booting from the cdrom. Now if I'm
reading things here right.....
1. I download the SP2 from the Microsoft site onto a cd. About 2 hrs. By the
way, one link mentioned "A smaller, more appropriate download is now
available on Windows Update". Why not that one? Do I need to slipstream? Why
would I want to slip stream? Just curious.
2. I download the Autostreamer.
3. Do the repair.
4. Run Autostreamer and everything is right with the universe. Far out!
Thanks again to all.

Why
would I want to slip stream? Just curious.

Creating a 'slipstreamed' installation CD is not a mandatory step. It's
simply a way to get around having to install the latest service pack after
the repair installation is complete. For example, let's say I have an older
installation CD that came with Service Pack 1. If I boot from that CD and
perform a repair installation on a system that has Service Pack 3 already
installed, the procedure will result in the installation being repaired but
only having Service Pack 1 installed. I would then have to install Service
Pack 3 and any subsequent updates to have a fully patched system. OTOH, if I
create a 'slipstreamed' installation CD that has the Service Pack 3 files
already integrated, the finished repair will only require updates that were
released after SP3.
2. I download the Autostreamer.
3. Do the repair.

No, you create your slipstreamed installation CD using AutoStreamer, then
run the repair.

For your info, the smaller version that exist in / on Windows Update
will only update the "modules" it detects that is installed on your
XP. It is not useful for the slipstreaming into the install CD.
