Upgrading from windows 98

My computer is being wierd. Every time i try to
upgrade to windows XP from 98 (not SE). My computer will
randomly restart
out of the blue and force me to redo that step until it
gets there again and
it restarts at that same point. please help. oh and all my
drivers are up to
date.
 
now it will just do it any time. My computer restarts at
random. please help me.
