Upgrading from Windows 98 to XP

Please tell me if I can upgrade to XP from 98 or is it
best to backup my system, reformat my computer and then
install XP and then install all my programs anew?

I firmly advise to do a clean install !
I did an upgrade at first myself, and decided to do a clean install after
all.
I can't describe how much better that clean install is running. The
difference is simply HUGE.
