I've tried upgrading to XP Pro but it says that it's not
possible, but according to Microsofts website it says that
it is - any ideas?

You can upgrade 98 to XP - If you have a retail boxed XP Pro. You can't do
a upgrade with XP Pro OEM, which it sounds like you have. An OEM version
will do a clean install only, and is licensed for only the computer it is
first installed on.

It is, provided that there is adequate hardware - you need in practice a
CPU at over 300MHz and RAM of *more* than the recommended 128MB, and 3GB
or more currently of free space on the hard disk. And provided it is a
*retail* XP CD, not one of the OEM ones sold with a notional bit of
hardware, which will only install on a freshly formatted disk

Then you may have some other hardware item installed or a software
system that is incompatible. If you run the XP CD from the present
system and take 'Check System Compatibility' it will tell you. Then if
all is well, use Install and continue with Upgrade.
