Upgrading from Win Me

I am trying to upgrade my PC from Win Me to Win 2000 (base level); I have
done it
before without a problem.

This time, however, the upgrade process has gone into a loop.

All was well until the last set of operations - Performing Final Tasks. On
this
screen, it went through the first two items (Install Start Menu Items and
Register

Components) OK. It then proceeded to 'Upgrades program and system
settings'; this was very slow, with a long pause about one-eighth of the way
along the progress bar.

Eventually, it proceeded to about 3/4 of the way, then it skipped the last
two
items and rebooted.

Having rebooted, it re-started Setup. I have been through the process
several more times - always the same. I tried starting in Safe mode - same
(in fact, the screen looks identical in Safe mode, so perhaps Setup runs in
Safe mode anyway).

I have SP 4 (as an EXE file). I thought to run that but cannot get a DOS
prompt -
the startup screen has a MS-DOS choice but that turns out to be running
under Me
still and produces a 'missing file' msg.

Help!

Windows 2000 came out first.
Windows ME was released later.
It follows that you cannot "upgrade" from Windows ME to Windows 2000.
It would be a "backgrade", and is therefore unsupported. Sometimes you're
lucky - it might just work. However, if you want a good, solid, robust and
reliable system then you must install Win2000 from scratch.

It's not technically possible to perform an upgrade from WinMe to
Win2K, as WinMe is the newer OS. You would have to back up your data
and start with a clean hard drive.
