upgrading error from 98 to XP

While trying to upgrade to xp I get to the end of the
process and come up with the error cannot find NT Loader
so the upgrading of XP will not complete. What do I have
to do to complete the upgrade and avoid this error?

Don't do an upgrade. Do a backup to save anything you do not want to lose,
then do a clean install by wiping the partition (you DO have your OS in its
own partition, right?) and installing from scratch.
