ve tried Has anyone had the problem of "Automatic" updates appearing to
function normal - but withing 2-3 minutes the update notification again
appears in the system tray with the same update due? I've tried several
times and still get the same results.

Yes--this is happening to a good many folks, but not everyone:

Follow the steps in the above KB article--that should remove the partially
installed update and allow the next attempt to fully install.

Some folks have seen this issue repeat with successive definitions--most, I
believe, haven't.

I have had this problem with the last three MS Defender Beta 2 definition
updates. I've started unchecking the box next to the Definition Update Title
and clicking "Close." A Hide Updates box pops open and I check "Don't notify
me of these updates again." This stops the recurrance, but I don't think the
updates are completing. Defender displays a warning that it has not been
updated in 15 days, which would be roughly the same period that I have been
experiencing this probelm.
