Upgrade

Hi, I purchased a SONY VAIO a couple of years ago (I will never purchase one
again), and I'm thinking about upgrading the motherboard. To do this, I have
to have the WindowsXP CD installation, which I don’t have because SONY is
cheap and doesn't supply one. I have the PCV-RX881 VAIO model, and when I
contacted Sony about this, surprisingly they said to ship it to a repair
center to get it "fixed". Of course it costs almost 400 dollars to ship it
in. When I purchased the computer they gave me my Windows CD KEY, and I was
wondering if I could use my friend's installation CD, but enter in my cd key.
Would that work? What I really want to avoid is sending it into Sony or
buying a completely new Windows XP operating system. Any suggestions would be
helpful, and much appreciated.

Most probably not, but you should be able to purchase an OEM version of
XP with your new Motherboard at a price less that that of the retail
version.

Hii thats kool news that sony supports motherboard upgrade. now i think ur
windows xp version is oem licence (assoc. to mother board) that means u
cudnt use it on other systems except the one its given on. if ur friend has
exactly the same system as that of urs then u can use that cd and ur key if
its not oem licence to install.

Hope this helps..,

Hii, Jupiter this is specially for u ;) thanks for helping me improve...,

Vince, not many companies support an motherboard upgrade feature once u buy
a specific model, suprisingly according to u sony does.

The xp on your system is provided by sony that would imply your xp is a oem
license that means u cant install an oem license on a different motherboard
than the one provided.

now you can just use the key on the same motherboard with the cd provided or
with the cd that of other exact model of your system (from your friend if he
has the same model) in either case, you cant install it on a new motherboard
u can just use that cd n its key to format recover or reinstall on the same
pc (with same mother board)

As i see you have two options u can either send it to sony pay for
additional cost of hardware ugrade and high shipping charges or buy a new
motherboard and new xp license that way even in future hardware upgrades you
dont need to worry.

ps: just a note: in either case first backup all ur data into a different
media.

Hope this helps..,
