Upgrading from XP Home to XP Professional

I have a Sony VAIO that came without a disk. I went out and purchased the XP
Professional cd to do an upgrade. While it's upgrading, it's stops on files
like ntr, etc. saying it cannot find them. I'm guessing that's because of the
differences in features. Sony is absolutely no help so I'd like to know other
than backing up and doing a complete clean install on the C drive, are there
any other options or steps I should take. Right now my boot screen says XP
Home edition and finish XP Professional install. While I'm not afraid to try
a work around, this will be my first time doing an upgrade versus a clean
install. Thanks in advance.

If your installed XP Home is up to SP2 and the XP Pro CD is not SP2 then
you'll have problems as you cannot upgrade an 'older' version over a 'newer
version'; even if it's Pro over Home.

Are you booting from the XP Pro CD or trying to upgrade from within Home? If
you're running the upgrade from within Home try booting from the Pro CD and
upgrading from there.

True, but that's a very easy problem to get around, in a coupleof different
ways.. Moreover the symptoms of that problem are completely different from
michele2000's. You simply get a message telling you that you are trying to
upgrade with an older version than what's installed.

I'm not sure what michele2000's problem is, but that's not it. If the
installation fails because it isn't finding files, it's likely that either
the CD is bad or there's a problem with her CD drive.

it's true that it would be difficult to install an older version over a new
one. But you could always unistall SP2 via add/remove programs. Then try
installing anew..... toodooloo
