I have a Sony Vaio with XP home edition plus SP2. How easy is it to install
XP Professional as an upgrade operating system.

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional w/SP2.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program and then defrag your hard drive.

Easy if you buy a retail XP Pro upgrade CD *with SP2 included* These
are now available in stores - make sure the box has a flash referring to
Service Pack 2

You then run that from the Home System, take install, continue with
Upgrade

First make sure Pro has something you need - the central systems are
identical. See
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
for the list of things that are in Pro only. In addition Pro will
support ten simultaneous connections in a network - Home only five

If you see no need for any of these Pro only matters, save money and
stick to Home
