Upgrade Windows ME to XP Pro

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade Windows Me to XP but have struck an issue. At one
stage Windows 2000 was installed in a dual boot configuration with ME. Since
then the boot.ini file has been edited to remove the reference to the
c:\winnt folder and the folder has been deleted. But the upgrade still stops
and says it found a second operating system and aborts.

Is there some way to allow this upgrade to proceed?

Thanks,

John

What is the exact error message? It sounds like you are trying to perform an
upgrade with an OEM copy of XP.

Here is what you probably need to do:
First of all make sure that all important data is backed up
and that you have the ability to reinstall any current programs if needed.
Then follow the instructions in the following article even though you are
not getting that particular error message:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314057/EN-US/
By the way while still booted into DOS with the boot floppy,
and at the C:\> prompt,
type in this command "del boot.ini" (without quotes)
Just to make sure that the boot.ini file is gone before trying to upgrade again
Also be sure to run the Compatibilty Advisor check before doing the upgrade
and address any issues it reports before proceeding with the upgrade.

Thanks for all comments. The upgrade has now worked successfully. I think I
actually renamed the WINNT folder and the upgrade still found it. When I
deleted it and then restarted the computer, the upgrade worked fine.
