I currently have Win 98 and want to install Xp now. Can I buy Windows XP home edition UPGRADE and do a clean install or does the upgrade work only if Win 98 is already installed?

basically do I spend $99 for an upgrade version or $199 for a new copy of X

Thanks

If you have a win98 cd then get the upgrade version. The upgrade will do
clean or upgrade installs.
If you have no cd, the upgrade version will see win98 on the drive and do
either install, but the next time you have to reinstall or format and
reinstall you'll have no proof for the upgrade cd cause your win98 is gone,
so it won't work.
So basicly:
if you have win98 cd = upgrade version of xp
If no previous windows version cd = full version of xp

Yes, you can, and should, do a "clean" installation. The only requirements
is that you need the original Windows 98 CD (no Recovery CD) so that XP can
check to see if you qualify for the Upgrade.

The Upgrade will do a clean install. Boot from the XP CD and select new
install. You will have to insert your 98 CD (or another qualifying version)
when prompted.

Greetings --

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using the
Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and
format partitions as part of the installation process.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. The Upgrade CD checks to
see if a qualifying OS is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks
you to insert the installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately,
an OEM "Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must
have a true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and
*.cab files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to perform a
clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case,
there's no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD,
because the installation routing "remembers" that you started from
within the qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but
you get the same results: a clean installation of WinXP.

If you have a real Win 98 CD and not just restore media, you can do a clean
install with the upgrade version. If you only have restore media that
restores the computer to it's original shipped state, then you should get
the full version if your time is worth more than $100 per hour.
Restore media requires the system to be restored to the original shipped
state, before the upgrade will complete a new XP installation.
If you have a currently unused version of Win 95/98/98SE/Me the XP Home
upgrade can do a clean install. Win NT4/2000 requires the Pro upgrade.
If you have the option, I always suggest prepping for a clean install, but
choose to upgrade. From my personal experience, the upgrade when properly
prepped is indistinguishable from the clean install in stability and
performance. The only real difference is in the footprint. The upgrade makes
the most sense when you think about it in the context of your time spent.
Your choices,
Clean install = 30 min to hr +
Upgrade Install = 30 min to hr +
Successful Clean install + reconfigure + reinstall applications +
configuration of internet connections and restoration of backup information.
= Who knows? Probably more than a few hours and most likely days and with
the resultant surprises of important data not backed up and lost forever.

If you have a regular (not Restore) 98 CD you can just show that to
setup when doing a clean install after booting the XP CD. Or you can in
any case run the XD from the 98 (restored if necessary) and change
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, hit ESC, delete the present
partition and make a new one - by that time the check has been made.

I would urge you to at least try an upgrade in the first instance: it
normally goes well, and retains installed programs (with a couple of
specific points - Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm). If it does not work out, you
can *still* do a clean install; the converse has burned your bridges
