I recently upgraded my laptop from w98se to XPPro. I selected clean install
assuming that the disk would be wiped. XP has installed ok but all the
programs that were installed on w98se are still there, some of them work,
some don't. None of them show in program files. None of them show in
add/remove programs

All I need to know is if it is safe to delete these folders without
crunching any of the xp system files?

many thanks

Did you upgrade while in Win98? If so, Win 98 was upgraded and not
replaced. You may want to reinstall XP buy booting from the XP CD and
perform a clean install.

It is safe to delete any of the folders belonging to programs that XP does
not know about. There is no relative registry info so there should be no
impact* on your XP installation.

*System Restore may temporarily suspend itself if the total size of
monitored file types is large but it will automatically re-enable itself
when you've finished.

Greetings --

What you've done, in affect, is create a very unstable dual-boot
configuration. When electing to perform a clean installation, you
must subsequently tell the OS setup routine which partition to use,
and then tell it to format said partition with the file system of your
choice. You apparently selected the existing partition, but neglected
to tell the installer to format.
