I have a winxp computer that was upgraded in-situ from
w98. The antivirus program cannot apply the updates
properly, I have found that the registry key that defines
the O/S in the antivirus program is reporting the O/S as
Win98.

How can I get rid of this without having to reinstall
clean

You should have uninstalled the anti-virus before upgrading to XP.

Now, you will have to uninstall the anti-virus and then reboot and
re-install the anti-virus so that it now understands it is on XP.

Y.

The antivirus was uninstalled before the upgrade and the
registry entries and folders removed. Then it was
reinstalled again.

I have since uninstalled and reinstalled the program with
the same problem.

Remove and subsequently re-install the antivirus. It has picked that up
when it was installed, and should get it right next time round. (Which
one was it BTW?)
