Upgrade Home to Pro

Guest

I need to upgrade Home to Pro (domain network reasons) but not sure on the
best approach as I don't want to lose all the programs and documents that
have already been installed.
1. is there an upgrade disc and where do you get it?
2. shove in a new xp pro disc and do some sort of upgrade from that?
Thanks for any pointers

Yes it's called the Windows XP Professional Upgrade. THC's no special
CD just for you particular upgrade, but a regular upgrade CD works
fine.

You can also use a Full version CD (but not an OEM CD, which some
people confuse wit the Full version). However it costs substantially
more than an Upgrade CD.

However, whatever you do, there are no guarantees that it always works
perfectly. However unlikely, it's always possible that something might
go wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be sure you have a backup of
anything you can't afford to lose before beginning.

Yes, it's called a XP Pro Upgrade Disk. Get it from any software reseller.

Yes you can do an upgrade with a full _retail_ XP Pro disk, but not an OEM
disk. But a full retail is much more expensive than the upgrade disk (which
is also retail).

Backup the important data. Better yet image the system to an external drive
using something like Acronis True Image. That way if something goes wrong
you can restore the image, and be running in a short time. Plus you have it
to use for backups.

Also if IE7 is installed you might want to uninstall that before doing the
upgrade, then reinstall after.

Make sure the system is running well with no operational problems, and it's
free of all malware.

Yes. Wherever software is sold.

Precisely.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating system
while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things can
go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all important
to you, back it up before proceeding.

Normally, the upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular,
almost always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.
