Home ---> Pro Upgrade

I recently took my PC back to the shop for repair after a software error and
when it returned (after having been wiped) the shop had upgraded the version
of XP Home that came with the machine up to SP2.

On inserting my XP Pro disc and attempting to upgrade the system to XP Pro I
received an error message telling me the version of Windows I was trying to
upgrade was newer than the version I was attempting to install. Is there any
way (other than a complete reinstall of Windows) that I would be able to
upgrade from XP Home SP2 to XP Pro?

Many thanks

Make an installation CD of XP Pro slipstreamed with SP2. That can be
used to upgrade XP Home XP2. Here are some links on slipstreaming:

:

Not true. Home to Pro is a legitimate upgrade path.

You've said this here before, and it's been pointed out to you
before that you are completely wrong. Stop repeating
misinformation.
Yes, you can upgrade XP Home to Professional. There is no special
upgrade version just for this, but the regular XP Professional
Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't say so on the box). In
fact, it's the easiest and most likely successful of all possible
upgrades.

Many thanks for the prompt reply, Ken. I know it is possible to upgrade from
Home to Pro, since I have performed this upgrade several times previously on
machines. Unfortunately though, the problem appears to be that the Home
version I am attempting to upgrade is SP2, whereas my Pro cd is just the
basic Pro version, which therefore is older than my current install, being
as it does not contain SP2.

Many thanks

Because you have SP2 installed, and your XP Professional Upgrade
is without it, you're trying to upgrade with an older version
than what's installed.

You have two choices:

1. Uninstall SP2, do the upgrade, then reinstall SP2.

2. Create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including
SP2, and use it. See

Excellent, I didn't know it was possible to uninstall SP2 - I assumed that
once it was installed it could not be reverted. Just looked in Add/Remove
programs and found it there at the bottom of the list...

Had heard about this method of creating an SP2 version of an XP cd althought
I was unsure whether or not this was an official or unofficial method of
getting around the problem. I didn't want to end up causing more harm than
good.

Thanks for the help!

You're welcome. Slipstreaming is fine and if I were in your
shoes, that's what I would do. You can't cause any harm trying
it. Worst case, if you do it wrong, the slipstreamed version just
won't work.
