trying to upgrade from XP Home to Pro. Install begins
and says DVD-RAM Driver is incompatable and a compatable
driver will be installed. I click next. Install
continues loading files etc. Install restarts the
computer and comes up with screen with two choices XP
Home or XP Pro Setup(default) If I leave it on XP Pro
Setup, it appears to start windows then goes to a black
screen and nothing happens.....

If I choose Home... it starts XP Home like normal.

Why cant I install xp pro?

Suggestion.
Do a clean install. It seems more people unsuccessfully install PRO over
HOME than people successfully do it. 2nd part though is that you do know
that PRO and HOME are essentially the same thing correct? The differences
are unlikely to even be noticed by the average user.

Contrary to what MS says, MS OS's are ALWAYS best installed clean. I
agree on that.
