Upgrade from Windows 2000 to 2003 AD

Just a quick question on upgrading from W2K to W2k3 AD. What I would
like to do is join 2 windows 2003 servers as domain controllers to a
2000 AD environment. AD will then be mixed mode (I think). After this,
upgrade 2000 AD to 2003 AD and then demote my 2000 DC's? Will this work?

Yes

Mode doesn't matter when you are placing a 2003 dc into the domain, just if
you wanted to change the mode then you need to know which dc's belonged to
the domain.

This isn't a easy answer to this not so "easy question." Once you make the
2003 machines member servers you will need to know which machines hold the
fsmo roles for the domain. To find this out key the following at a command
prompt

netdom query fsmo

You will then need to run adprep on your forest on the schema master role
holder and adprep on the domain on the infrastruture master fsmo role
holder. Finally promote a 2003 member server to a DC.

Once you have both 2003 dc's promoted you will then need to decommission the
older dc's. I have an article on how to do this as listed below.

Note most installations that have AD seem to also have Exchange, this is a
big piece in the upgrade. You have to deal with additional issues (Such as
mangled attributes) that I haven't covered. For a complete detailed list on
how to do the upgrade see the first link below, this will also cover the
Exchange piece.
