Upgrade from Win 98se to Win XP Pro

I'm thinking about upgrading from Win 98se to Win XP Pro.

Can this be done with a full version Win XP Pro CD without loosing
files and programs on the HD (or do you need a special upgrade CD)

I know a full format is recommended, but I'd like to try an upgrade
(cleaning system and registry as good as possible first of course)

Also, will I need to uninstall special programs, or is it enough to
diable them from startup (using "msconfig") while upgrading:

- avast! anti-virus (is it installed differently on XP and 98?)
- ZoneAlarm (is it installed differently on XP than on 98?)
- Norton Utilities 2002 (it has other modules on XP than on 98)

And will older games like these work OK on XP with SP2:

- Need for Speed II SE
- Need for Speed 3 - Not Pursuit (made for 95 and 98)
- Need for Speed Porche Unleased
- Quake (the orignial using VGA graphics and DOS at startup)
- Quake 2 (also using some DOS things at startup)
- Duke Nukeem 3D (also using some DOS things at startup)
- Wolfenstein 3D (the original, also using VGA and DOS?)
- Leisure Suit Larry 1-5 (from the complete box release)

Does XP have some kind of compability mode to run old programs that
depend on MS-DOS and VGA-graphics, and is this in XP Pro too, or do I
need the XP Home edition (does that contain more non-business stuff)

Any other good tips when upgrading from 98se to XP?

games only to the *.games group, and so on...)

Sure - that's a good way of doing it. I'd recommend uninstalling any third-party hardware items (printer, wireless, etc) and then reinstalling them after the xp upgrade. Installing over 98 will most likely insure that any computer proprietary items (on-board modem, on-board NIC, audio and/or graphics cards) will be found and configured.

Good luck!

As long as it's a retail version. OEM versions can't upgrade, and yes
XP has a compatability mode.
