Upgrade from 98 to XP

Brian

I would like to upgrade from 98 to XP on an old laptop
that I have. The laptop is currently running Win98 (not
SE). I read in the system requirements for the upgrade on
another website that you need 98se or better. I wanted to
know if this was true, or if it really did not matter.
Also, the laptop has 160mb of ram and a 4 gb hd. Is this
sufficient for this upgrade. I believe the free space
currently about 1.5gb.

Thanks

Win98 will work fine.
Laptops are usually full of proprietary hardware and drivers, so upgrading
from an old win98 laptop to xp may have mixed results. It should work, but
you may not be able to find the correct drivers you'll need to get it up and
running correctly. Try the upgrade compatability test first.
Also, I'd add more memory -- 256mb minimum, but the more the better.
4gb will be enough, but xp will use at least half of that if not more.

From what you've posted dont even consider it. Stay with 98. Chances are
that (apart from the fact there isnt enough RAM anyway) the machine will be
too slow, you are pushing it on disk space, and as its a laptop there may
well be a bunch of drivers and propritary hardware and adapters that wont
work with XP. have you run the upgrade assistant?

Oh, and chances are you'll have to get new versions of most of your current
applicatiosn as well.

I just installed WinXP Home on a Sony P3, 450 MHz, 128 MB, 6 GB and
everything works just fine. No problem with drivers, XP had everything
required.

Not really. The RAM is very much an absolute minimum, good for email
and simple word processing and not much more, and the hard disk would be
very tight indeed. I would leave well alone
