upgrade 98SE to Win XP Pro

Can anyone give me an answer, I am trying to upgrade 98SE OEM to XP Pro using
the upgrade version, when it starts to do a compatabilty check about 5
seconds in I get an error message, Fatal Error, Setup cannot continue,
contact microsoft tech support error 5FBFF5Ch. Phoning tech support is like
waiting forever. The system is AMD K6/2 450 768 meg ram about 2 GB free
space on the boot partition, HDD is 60GB connected to a ATA100 controller
card.

I hope someone has an answer for me.

Hi,

I have tried the articles none of them help. It seems that no one has an
answer as I can not find a reference to this error number anywhere. It maybe
is getting time I try for a refund, this problem and the lack of "tech
support fom microsoft " is really starting to make Linux look inviting.

This is June 25 and no MVP can come up with an answer, it is almost
impossible to get phone support as my life does not include sitting in a
phone cue for hours on end. There must be someone who can answer this
question???

Checked for a BIOS upgrade for your motherboard?
Tried performing a CLEAN install instead of an upgrade?

I wouldn't even bother doing either - as that machine is woefully
underpowered and not enough space on the "boot partition" to make it
worthwhile.

Did you try and run the Upgrade Advisor before purchasing Windows XP?

Windows XP Upgrade Advisor
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx

When you can get $399 computers's that are 5 times the speed as the machine
you mention - with Windows XP included - it seems almost a waste to try and
upgrade/spend money on just the upgrade media/license.

Also - you do realize MVPs are no different (other than having been
recognized by Microsoft) than any other volunteer on the newsgroups, right?

As for the "Linux" comment - go for it. With that machine's power - you
would be better off with a basic linux install than any Windows XP
installation as far as performance.
