Upgrading to XP form 98SE

Prior to installing the upgrade I have downloaded and run the Microsoft
Windows XP Upgrade Advisor and am acting/will act on all its
recommendations. However, in reading various articles from the web on
upgrading, some of the more comprehensive ones, in addition, recommend
rolling back some of the Microsoft software to the version released with
98SE. For example IE, OE, Direct X and Media Player. Is this really
necessary in all cases? I realise that time and versions of software have
moved on but in one case it specifically says that if you have upgraded to
IE5.5 in all versions of 98 uninstall it. I am running the latest IE6 for
98SE so does this rollback apply in this case or is it a specific for IE5.5.
Thanks
Alan

Why worry about roll-back,simply install xp,either in windows explorer
(upgrade)
or boot to xp cd,install xp,delete the partition (98),create one, then xp
formats
and does a clean install. The later is microsoft recomended since you can
format
and install in ntfs file system,98 uses FAT32,xp is ntfs by default...

Shenan,
Regarding IE, Gary's article, section 4
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm mentions IE 5.5. He doesn't mention
IE6 but given the age of the article, I thought I would ask the question.
The report from the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor is telling me that I will
need to download the Directx 9.0 update for Windows XP. I am not too sure if
the update is an add on to what I have already have or it is in lieu of.
Finally re Media Player, I am sure I have read it somewhere about rollback
for this software. However, having read so many articles over the last few
days, I now cannot remember where I read it, but I thought I would ask
anyway.
