Updating Signatures WITHOUT Windows Update

First, I really like Defener!

Though, it appears, in reading posts, that Defender uses Windows/Microsoft
Update to update its signatures. The problem I have, though, is that our
network admin has Windows/Microsoft Update blocked using a group policy.
Even the Automatic Updates features of the OS are disabled.

1. Am I correct in understanding that the Windows/Microsoft Update is used
to deliver updated signatures?
2. If so, is there another way to manually download the updates directly
from Microsoft's website?
3. Am I completely off base? When I click the "Check for Updates" button, I
get a balloon that states "Windows Defender was unable to complete the
update: 0x80240025" immediately (without making any apparent attempts to
connect anywhere).

Any assistance or insight would be appreciated!!!

Yes (If you network uses Windows Software Update Services, it can be
delivered that way too.

from Microsoft's website?
Yes, Click the down arrow beside Help in the Windows Defender main window,
click About Windows Defender. On the About dialogue, you will see a button
named "Check for Updates". click it.

If you are experiencing difficulty updating Windows Defender BETA 2, please
try the following work around suggested by Steve Dodson:

Open the command prompt
Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\ folder
Execute the following command: msiexec /x AS_Sigs.msi
Then Check for updates

Microsoft wants your network admin to be able to secure the network. If
WSUS is in use on your network, you can encourage the admin to make the
signature updates available that way, and it will work automatically.
