updates will not install

I keep getting windows updates available messages. When I
go to download them, the download bar goes all the way
across then it stops. It will not install. What is
wrong, and how do I fix it?
HELP!!!

Hi,

This is the short version of steps to troubleshoot access problems:

Disable any/all of the following installed on your system:

- firewall (even the native one)
- antivirus software
- popup stopper
- download manager

Go to the Control Panel/Internet Options, click on "languages" and make sure
at least your default language is installed.

Check the Date & Time applet and make sure that the day/month, and
especially year are correct, if you are out of date by 90 days or more you
will not see any updates.

Add these sites to the list of trusted sites under Internet Options/security
in the Control Panel:

https://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://Download.Windowsupdate.com
https://a248.e.akamai.net

Then retry Windows Update. If this doesn't help, try more troubleshooters
here:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

you are going to have to dumb these directions down some,
i don't know how to disable anything, and if i figure it
out , do i enable them again? i am having a lot of
problems right now. i'm having popups when i haven't had
them this much, i haven't been able to shut down propely.
it freezes on windows is shutting down..then i have to
press the button to turn off the computer....getting
very, very pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is a brand new dell system.

I've been having more than my share of problems with
Windows XP lately so I understand how you feel.

One small suggestion: When your system (mouse)freezes up
don't turn off the computer untill you've first tried
pressing the Winkey (the one with the Windows flag on it)
then use the arrow key to scroll down to the shutdown
button. Turning off the computer while apps are still
running sends file fragments all over your hard drive and
over time leads to intense aggrivation, especially if you
don't defragment your system very often.

actally, my mouse doesn't freeze up, maybe i said it
wrong. the computer goes through the motions as if it
was shutting down, it gets to the "windows is shutting
down" screen, then it never shuts off.
