Windows will not install updates upon reboot

I am sorry but I already posted this in the wrong section so I am not sure if
it will make it here.

After updates have been downloaded to my XP if I go to reboot one of the
choices is to install updates and reboot. If I choose that the machine
reboots but does not install the updates.

I had this problem once before on another machine and found a simple
solution but I cannot find it again.

Any help appreciated on how to fix this.

The updates aren't installed or the installations fail to install?
