Updates.

The question has come up: Will the /existing/ XP updates still be
available after April?

VIZ: If one has do perform a fresh install ...next year for example will
the existing updates still be available on the Microsoft servers?

I never found a definite answer anywhere but I am going to guess..."Yes."

FWIW: Someone gave me a server (running Win2k Server) a few weeks ago
and I booted it up today and it downloaded and installed 43 updates!

Wow, Win2K update server is still alive and kicking. That means there are
still a number of important companies that use Win2K. Since the number of
WinXP PC is larger than Win2K, it's likely that the WinXP update server will
still run for another 10+ years.

But you might want to bookmark this. Just in case.

Does it mean that? That there are important companies using it? They
won't keep it running for, say, 100 individual users? After all, it's
not a separate server, is it? It's just a web address, a bunch of
files. and a list of old and new w2000 installations.

To amend myself, I'm not even sure there is a list. I was thinking MS
sought out users to send them updates, but surely I was wrong. It's
users who seek out MS to ask if there are updates. So all MS has to
have is an address (which already exists) to make requests to and a
bunch of update files (which are already written), a short program
(which has already been written), and a table to tell MS what to send,
based on the current update level of the individual user. The table too
has already been written.

That's where I get mine. It should be around for a long time.
The MS site has not worked for me since 11-24-12 and I gave
up trying to make it work again.

I had extreme problems with it too...
but tried it today and it worked fine.

It should be noted that you are still getting your updates from
Microsoft, you are just using the wsusoffline tool to download them.

Even after installing the latest cumulative update for
Internet Explorer ? That's to speed up the wuauserv loop.

I have not reinstalled sp3. According to MS this machine does
not have sp3, however I know it does, so something got
corrupted or changed right after 11-24-12. Reinstalling sp3
might get it to working however fixing all the things I have
installed since sp3 is not something I want to do.
So I just use Belarc or wsusoffline. Not much difference since
I would never turn on Auto anyways.

Yes, but if MS ever discontinues hosting them, at least I will have them
on my hard drive.
