updates not being recognized

Hi - bit new to this so apologies if in wrong place! Am running windows xp
home fine but lately when i install updates all goes well and then a short
while later the update "shield" appears again to say i have further updates!
Went onto ms website and checked my updates - had installed same update 4
times but the little yellow update shield is still showing to install again!
Have tried re-booting after update but still keeps coming back - only thing i
can think off is i am now running Bitdefender virus/spyware - could this be
interfering with it? None of the controls for Bitdefender mention blocking
the ms site or updates - might not be this but cannot think of anything else
i have different!
Any help gratefully received! Thanks alot
