I have been trying to install WindowsXP SP2 & office 2002 updates (following
a system crash & re-installation of Windows) without sucess. I have
validated & activated Windows (a retail copy) with assistance from this forum
but downloading WGA(N) has not helped. What else can I do? Updates on other
programmes (ie explorer)are bieng installed but not windows.

As you are using that cranky error prone web interface discussion group, the
second one is suggested as more appropriate.

Windows Update specific newsgroup:

Via NNTP server (your newsreader):
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate
Via WEB:
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...efault.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

You cannot install some updates or programs: Go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798&Product=winxp
You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when you
try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Please copy and paste the following into a Notepad and safe as Reg.bat on
your Desktop then double click the Reg.bat to execute it and click "YES" to
register the Required DLLs for the windows updates engine.

regsvr32 Msxml.dll
regsvr32 Msxml2.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

Reboot the machine and see if you will be able to get and install any updates.

Glad to read your probs are fixed - I was a bit lazy not to have given you
the more direct links provided by nass.
Have you considered using newsgroups rathert than the web interface.
It is so much easier to handle - just like sending an email.
