WGA Update, part II

Ghostrider, et al, thanks for your comments.

I am mostly only curious about this. I have my security setting as "Download
updates, but let me decide when to install them." I get the 2nd Tuesday
updates, as usual, and the occasional emergency ones, too. Without a
problem, as far as I can tell. So, something WGA-like is working here...

YET, when I go to the Windows Update site, I can't get any further there
than the latest WGA.

AND, let us not forget, every single time I look at the security certificate
for the ActiveX control necessary to install WGA, it has an EXPIRED date on
it. For crying out loud, WGA is the centerpiece of the Windows security
system. I have spent countless hours with Microsoft trying to get an answer
to this question, and it's the definition of madness--expecting a different
result when you do the same thing.

Cheers!

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure, courtesy of MS MVP
Carey Frisch:

1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and
then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA
Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data
in a detailed post:
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an
appropriate solution.

WGA is not used when Automatic Updates is enabled as Security updates do
not require it.
When visiting either update site WGA is required as there are other
updates besides Security ones that are offered.
As to the expired date ... according to MS that's 'expected behavior'.
Why ? Don't ask me, ask MS.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
Method 8: Verify the status of all certificates in the certification
path and import missing or damaged certificates from another computer
6. Click OK, and then double-click the NO LIABILITY ACCEPTED certificate.
7.On the General tab, make sure that the Valid from dates are 5/11/1997 to 1/7/2004.
Note Although this certificate is expired, the certificate will continue to work. The
operating system may not work correctly if the certificate is missing or revoked. For more

Hi MowGreen,

Thanks for your note. I wonder if you can tell me the source of your
assertion
"As to the expired date ... according to MS that's 'expected behavior'. Why
? Don't ask me, ask MS. "

I wonder why I wasn't able to reply to this message until after I rebooted
my machine, during which time my Firefox browser dumped its home page and
lost its memory of sites I had visited. I clicked "reply" and the status bar
moved but the frame never loaded. Curiously, I had the same experience when I
used the computer at the public library with an IE browser.

I also wonder why, often, after I visit these support forums, my Firefox
browser dumps my home page and loses its memory as it did just now.

Thanks again to everyone.

It may be that one of your extensions in Firefox is causing this issue,
but it may also be related to a setting you've made - I do not know how
you have set it up.
I haven't had loss of any kind of profile information since version
2.0.0.5 was released by Mozilla.

I never much liked posting to newsgroups via a web interface anyway,
although it can be conveniant while unable to access my own setups while
on the road, assuming you are using a web interface right now and not
something like an extension to Firefox.
My personal preference is Xnews, free and easy to use, and also capable
of running from an USB drive across different computers when setup right.
You could also use Mozilla Thunderbird, Outlook Express, or..[others]

It's in the KB article:

Read - Method 8: Verify the status of all certificates in the

Have you read Ace's post yet. You *really* should.
