New WGA causing pc to totally lock up when it is installed.

Guest

We install WGA on dozens of computers every week but I have a customer here
who's pc will not install WGA without freezing the entire pc.

Everything has been perfectly working on this pc until automatic updates
tried to install the latest WGA but now it will not install no matter how
(automatic updates / activex control, etc). The whole system hangs, we can't
even hit cntl-alt-del or click anything with the mouse.

The Windows is definately legit, purchased from an MS authorized vendor by
us, not that this would make a difference anyway. Even if it was not legit,
it should just pop up the notification box and not cause the whole system to
hang. We just can't get it to do anything. I've tried turning off all
startup programs and system services, even tried in safe mode with
networking. Nothing works.

I tried the WGA diagnostic tool...it locks up too.

If anyone has an idea on this one let me know...I'm frustrated beyond words.
Thanks,
Andrew

What's even more pathetic is that WGA ONLY benefits MS and does not
benefit the end user in any way.

Have you tried System Restore?

Hi,
We did a system restore to fix the problem they brought the pc back to us
for (windows would hang after explorer loaded because it was trying to run
the wgatray.exe or whatever). It is a functional pc now but if they ever
need to download something that requires WGA they are out of luck until we
get a solution.

They had to take the pc as it is (it belongs to a business and they need it
constantly) but I am hoping to get some other answer as to what might cause
this.

When it locks up the mouse cursor still moves around the screen but it is an
hourglass and you cannot do anthing with it.

Thanks,
Andrew

I have the same problem and would be very interested if a fix was
supplied. I have send a Support Request to MS but haven't yet got a

their reply was to edit my registry permissions!). The system got to be

Once again, here we have proof that WGA only inconveniences paying
customers and doesn't affect piracy one iota:

Oh yeah! Cool! Another "legal agreement between you and Microsoft

Windows Update support team have to do with any of this "AGREEMENT"
horsecrap? Email is email. I pay my ISP for it.

No thanks.

Sorry, but I do not get any error messages (or I am not looking in the
right place) just a system hang. There is nothing wrong with my
registry settings for LegitCheckControl. The last entry in
WGANOTIFY.LOG is "Starting process: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wgatray.exe
/b".
The link says to run WGADIAG.EXE which I can do without a problem. The
top line says Genuine in green.
Still no reply from my Support Request to MS.

Problem is now fixed. I tried the "is windows legal" link from Help on
My Computer and got the same hang. So it is not specific to WGATRAY. I
went to Windows Update again and carefully checked for updates. This
time it said KB892130 needed to be installed even though my system says
it has been installed twice. Installed this and the windows legal test
ran successfully. I reinstalled KB905474 again, this time successfully.
Thank you MS for wasting several days of my time.
