Updates Boxes Grey, can't select them

I just did a complete reinstall of XP Home and now I can't get updates. The select boxes are shaded grey. How do I fix this to get my critical updates? There are 45 to download

Windows Update Fails:
Disable your firewall and anti-virus when obtaining the updates.
