Hi James,

It could well be a virus or malware, though off the top of my head I do not
know of any that create your symptoms. But you should be doing regular
checks of your system for such.

There are Group Policies for Internet Explorer that disable a user from
changing their toolbars so if this is occurring on a work machine you should
consult your Network Administrator to see if they have applied this policy
to your workstation. (since the View options on the menu are all greyed out,
this suggests that this is the likely cause!)

You could also try resetting the toolbars by downloading and running
ITbarlayout.reg from http://www.iecustomizer.com/itbarlayoutdownload.htm

but this will not have any effect if your Network Administrator has a Group
Policy in place.

A third reason for the Address Bar not appearing is a missing component of
IE (browseui.dll). You can correct this by either re-installing IE or
registering (regsvr32.exe) this component. Post back to this thread with the
version of your system (XP?) if you require instructions to do this.

I trust this has been of assistance.

Try this:
Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced and uncheck the box for Enable
third party browser enhancements.
