Updated XP 64 bit. Changed Outlook newsreader

D

Dennis Gordon

Hi everyone...

Running Outlook XP on my new machine. I was running the evaluation version
of XP 64 bit. I bought the OEM and installed it as an upgrade from the
evaluation. Everything went well; everything is working. The only anomaly is
that when I'm in Outlook and Go To >News, Outlook Express is launched. Now
I know that the Outlook newsreader is actually an Outlook Express component,
but in this case OE6 opens and starts checking mail as I'm reading messages.
I just want the newsreader component to open, as before. It's really not
that big of a hassle, but if there is a way to restore the newsreader to its
previous state, I'd like to try it. Thanks for any tips...

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.
