update problem

I have recently downloaded and installed a critical update
to I.E as instructed in a notice from Microsoft. Since
doing thatI cannot seem to access IE (I get the "Page
cannot be displayed" message or "Error 500"). Now I wonder
if the update notice was a fake and I have actually
brought down a virus. If so, how can I tell? My Norton
anti-virus is right up to date and shows no virus on my
hard disk. Can I de-install the patch? How? I don't want
to fiddle with the Registry if it can be avoided.
Any assistance will be gratefully received
