update corrupted config.sys

about 30 minutes ago (on another laptop) an update started coming through,
told me to restart and now it says config.sys corrupt or missing, use setup
disk and hit "r" to repair. ARGGHHH!!!!! It seems that not having auto
updates on is the way to go, any comments?

Can you boot into safe mode? Push F8 while the NB is booting.
If you're game, open a command prompt and delete config.sys (Del c:
\config.sys).

Re-create it as an empty file - type notpad c:\config.sys and - yes to
create a new file - save it.

Finally if your PC comes up, order a chkdsk /f in a command prompt for
the next re-boot to check your disk.

Please have another look at the error message. WinXP does
not use config.sys.
