Up grade to xp professional

I can not access files on my external drive after a rebuild of xp home
sp2. I cannot reclaim ownership of the files, as I can not access the
external drive in safe mode to get access to the security tab. Can I
up grade to xp professional to overcome this problem without losing
about 45 GB of data on my external drive. I would like a cheeper
solution if possible, as I have just been retired due to disability
it will be two months before I receive any type of income. My lady has
been on half pay for nearly a year due to loss of mobility in her
shoulder. We are totally out of cash, as we have had negative cash
flow for the last ten months - so if anybody knows a way round this
problem that does not involve money I would be most grateful.

Thank you.

Hi

Upgrading is not the way to solve problems - it is best if they are solved
before any upgrade of any kind. An upgrade could very well make the
situation worse. Have you tried the following MS article:

"How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&Product=winxp

I know how to take ownership of a file - the issue is with xp home you
have to boot into safe mode to have access to the security tab. In
safe mode I do not have access to the external drive - unless you know
how to instruct windows to load the drive and the required drivers for
the firewire port it is connected to. Can this be done with a script
telling windows the correct action to take? I was working on a win 2k
network helpdesk before I was retired but mostly supporting our users
with MS Office problems I last wrote a batch file about fifteen years
ago, so I don't have the knowledge to resolve this problem. Can you
help?

OS xp home sp2. One other thought since the last posting. If I cannot
access my external drive in safe mode to access the security tab to
the files that I need to reclaim ownership to is there any third party
software that would give that functionality with out the requirement
to be in safe mode at the same time? Is the pid number held in the
registry, if so can I change it to the pid of the new admin account to
reclaim ownership?
