Locked out of Folders/Files after back up restoral

Using Roxio 'Backup by PC' with external HD on an XP. When restored to my PC
(after a rebuild) every folder in the path down to the backed up file is
'access denied'. I was able to restore to a Vista machine and turned off
'retain folder structure' for simplicity. Then with my Vista I was able to
take ownership and open the permissions for access to the parent folder and
the invididual files. Then copied them back to my XP. Anyone know what is
happening here to cause such a headache? With XP home I can't find any way
to change security as I can on Vista.(I should have just dragged and
dropped!) Thanks.

Yes, I'm checking out the site but was also wondering if I can somehow change
ownership/permissions on components with XP Home like I was able easily do in
Vista.
