File ownership

Re post, as nobody has yet managed to offer a solution to this
problem. OS XP Home SP2
Do any of the MVP members have an answer?
I need to access the security tab to some files on my external drive
to reclaim ownership after a rebuild. The security tab is only
available with xp home while in safe mode. In safe mode device manager
does no load up external drives. How do I tell windows to load up this
external drive so it is available in safe mode?

If this functionality is not available within windows anybody know of
any 3rd party software that will give me access to the security tab
without the need to boot into safe mode?

Don't have a copy of XP Home, but how does your external drive connect - USB
or 1394? If USB, then XP Home should be loading the USB drivers in safe
mode, at least XP Pro does or I wouldn't be able to use by keyboard/mouse,
also, my two Maxtor one-touch II drives are still accessible. If the
latter, then I'm no help, but did you check with the drive manufacturer's
web site, in their knowledge base to see if they have a possible solution.

Other options:
Take the harddrive out of the external case (normally the case just
provides power and either a USB/1394 interface to the computer), and install
internally to the computer itself as a slave.
Connect the external drive to another computer which has XP Pro, maybe
you have a buddy with a laptop, take ownership there and copy to his hard
drive. Network the Laptop to your PC and copy them to it.
Upgrade to XP Pro??? Questionable there.
Install the resource kit files, I believe the CACLS command is in them,
then go to the "CMD" prompt and change the permission that way.

It connects via 1394

Checked drive manufacturer's web site, in their knowledge base - no
answer to this problem listed there

If I open the drive will it have an IDE connecter as its working off
1394?

That is a possibility

I assume a search on microsoft.com will lead me to this resource
kit?--

Help required with xcacls or cacls os xp home sp2
Trying to claim back ownership of folder on external fire wire D Drive
after rebuild. Folder is on D drive named Documents

This is an external drive, so no way to access security tab, as xp
home only gives access to security tab in safe mode, but does not load
up external fire wire drives in safe mode - hence has to be done via
cmd window. input "xcacls Documents /C" - output "D:/Documents"
and nothing else. Looks as if no acl set for this folder of any sort.

Can somebody please show the exact syntax to type at cmd window to
take back ownership for my log in of merrittj using xcacls or cacls
for the folder D:\Documents and all files child sub folders and files
- no mater what I try I still get access denied. I suspect that the
error is due to my lack of experience using this command.
Thank you.
