Unwanted rebooting...

Hi,

A while ago I think there was an article here about the strange and erratic
rebootings of XP computers. It has something to do with a particular virus
hanging around in the system. Could someone bring this up to light? A
co-worker had just started to have problems with her computer that had been
rebooting on its own from time to time and would like to help her out with
it.
Much obliged for your help.

Random reboots can be caused by a host of things. Hardware such as, bad
RAM, failing power supply, overheating CPU. Software, such as viruses,
driver conflicts, etc.

Without any error messages, it would take some troubleshooting to pin down
what is causing the problem. I would start with the software side, virus
and malware scan. I worked on one system not to long ago that had a driver
conflict after SP2 install and would reboot with no error.

After that, hardware. Make sure the CPU is not overheating, test the RAM,
check the voltages on the power supply. All of which can be a little
lengthy to get into without eliminating software first.

This won't fix your problem, but it'll keep your machine from rebooting.

Unless the rebooting is caused by a hardware problem.

It may also help reading a BSOD.

Choosing recovery actions if Windows stops unexpectedly

Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab |
Click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery |
Under System Failure | UNCheck: Automatically restart |
OK |Apply | OK

[[Specifies whether Windows will automatically reboot whenever the system
stops unexpectedly.
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to set
recovery options.]]

Many reboots are caused by failing hardware, driver problems, and
software incompatibilities.

Right click on My Computer, choose Properties, go to the advanced tab,
then uncheck, Automatically restart under the System failure section.
This will stop the rebooting so you can tell if your co-worker has one
of the problems I mentioned, if they don't have a virus.
