Unwanted Dual Booting..

I reformatted my computer and installed WinXP fresh from the disks that came
with my computer. Now when I turn on my computer I am given a list of OS's to
choose to boot, the choices being WinXP (which boots fine) and "WinXP" (which
gives errors).

I don't have any need to dual boot, is there any way I can turn this off?

Find the file:

c:\boot.ini

Make a copy of it in case you screw something up. This file contains the
list you are seeing, and specifies the location of OS's that it thinks exist
on your system, and various startup options for the OS.

Edit the file and delete the line that specifies the WinXP that doesn't
work. You might consider posting the file contents here to confirm which
line(s) you should delete. If you screw it up, you might not be able to
boot your system.

This is a strange problem that I've run into before... the new installation
by all accounts should not remember the old installatio;n but for some
reason it does anyway. The easeist way to get rid of it is to right-click
My Computer on your desktop, go to Properties, click the Advanced tab, and
under Startup and Recovery click the Settings button. Just uncheck the box
that says "Time to display list of operating systems." This will keep the
list from displaying at startup, and the machine will boot right into winxp.
It will leave the other line in boot.ini, but it won't do any harm, and you
won't run the risk of making your computer non-bootable if you accidentally
delete the wrong line.
