Unusual Problem - Comments Please

During the past month or so I've had two occasions where the mouse pointer
froze and my system totally locked up. I had to turn off the power in order
to recover. I thought this very unusual since my Windows XP Pro computers
never lockup.

The other day the same thing happened again but with an unusual twist. After
the lockup, I proceeded to turn off the system to recover. When I went to
press the power ON button, nothing happened. I thought an external circuit
breaker had tripped but that was not the case. After waiting several minutes
I discovered that the On button now worked so I powered up again. I used the
computer for a short time and the mouse pointed froze again. When I
attempted to power up, the same thing happened, power ON button would no
work for several minutes.

I immediately assumed that my system was overheating and that there was
probably a thermal shutdown protection on the system power supply. I then
checked and all system fans were working.

I decided to try one more thing - I rebooted and ran my Microsoft Flight
Simulator to really stress the CPU to see if this was a heat related
problem. Ran just fine for almost an hour before I stopped the program.

It was beginning to appear that the lockup was related to using the mouse.
I've now switched to another mouse (both were optical) and the system has
not yet froze. That doesn't necessarily mean that the problem is fixed but
it certainly seems that way. I'm really mystified as to why a mouse would
cause this try of problem - any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

An worn-out mouse? Some mice (mouses?) will wear out faster
than others, it could be a "lemon".

Hi Jim,

Is the Mouse, Wireless? Are you using Rechargeable Batteries? Did you change the Batteries, before replacing the Mouse?
