XP Pro - Freezes

I can't figure out my problem, it started with wiggling the mouse or touching
the keyboard wouldn't "wake up" my monitor, now my system keeps freezing up.
It's several minutes after booting up using minimal resources such as simply
checking email and the screen either goes blank or has a bunch of vertical
line across it and the system is then frozen. The only way to shut down is
hold the pwr button.

(I'm not sure whether this has an impact: I bought a flat screen Acer
monitor and the system recognizes it, but this problem started about 3 weeks
after the new monitor)

1st attempt - I reloaded the drivers, played with screen resolution, and
power management funcitons, that didn't work.
2nd attempt - I tried an XP repair and it froze in the middle of the repair.
3rd - I reformatted the hard drive and reloaded XP and all the drivers.

I was guessing a reformatted hard drive would have done it, but no luck. I
feel like I'm running out of ideas. I saw one suggestion to replace the
battery on the motherboard. Or I was thinking maybe I need a new video card?

Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks - Ryan

How old is this PC that you are having problems with? From what you've
described one possibility is that it's simply overheating. When was the
last time you opened the PC and blew the dust out with a can of
compressed air? If you've never done that, then it might be a good time
to try that and see if it helps.

perhaps you might try booting up
in safe mode and see if your pc is
responsive in those environments.

.....Got it, the fan on the cpu heatsink had siezed. New fan and added a
system fan to the case and I'm up and running again. I was suprised because
my heatsink fan was only about 1yr old...
