XP Pro freezing at start screen.

I have recently installed a driver for a lexmark 7100 series printer.
After installing and restarting the system, it freezes at the startup
screen where you are prompted for the admin password (freezing occurs
before the prompt is brought up). I have attempted booting into safe
mode. The system does not boot past a black screen with the safe mode
labels in the corners with an active cursor (nothing more). I have
tried using chkdsk /r, fixmbr, fixboot, and even tried replaceing the
windows .ini file (just on the off chance it would do anything). All
of my efforts have been in vain. While I am using an older IBM
notebook, it seems far too coincidental that the error occured after
the driver was installed. I do checks for viruses and other
maliciouse software regularly (using AVG adaware and spybot). Any
help on removing the driver (without the help of safe mode), or
whatever else must be done would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Chris

thank you for the responce. unfortunantly I cannot even get into the
command prompt. I had a feeling this was a hopeless case and will
probably have to wipe, but decided to see if anyone else could think
of anything i forgot.
