Unsafe removal of device

When I try to go into standby, hibernate, or when I turn off my usb printer,
I get the unsafe removal of device window. The computer will not go into
satndby or hibernate. The window shows a USB mass storage device and a
generic volume. The box is checked to show the icon on the task bar but it is
not present. If I want the pc to go into standby automaticly then I need some
sort of work around for this.
I thought usb was supposed to be hot pluggable? Is there a way to get
around this?
Win2K, Sp4,Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe Mb, 512 meg ram, AMD 2800 xp
